Aggressive dogs are quite a commonplace in most neighborhoods; which is why it is not very surprising to see small children or even adults being chased by dogs. What is important to note here is that there are better ways to react in dog attacks than trying to out run vicious dogs. Here is a compilation of the various tactics you can apply if you ever find yourself to be a victim of a dog attack.
The most important thing to keep in mind in case of a dog attack is that dogs as animals are physically more bestowed than humans are. Which means that they can not only run faster than the average human, but can also smell and hear better. Also since they function on instincts you can be sure that their senses are at their sharpest most of the times, because of which dogs can actually sense fear. So lesson number one when dealing with dogs, is to always try and hide your fear, if you can’t dampen that heartbeat enough, you can be sure that the dog knows you’re scared, and once this is the case, the dog becomes bolder.
Remember how people have been found to enjoy the chasing bit more than they actually enjoy the catch? One can assume the same for dogs too. Numerous theories have been propounded about why dogs chase cars. Whatever the reason may be, fact remains that they love their chases a lot. So then, Lesson number two while dealing with dogs is to never run when chased by one. Cut out the chase and you cut out the fun for the dog. Instead stand your ground, look at the dog and say “Shoo” or “Go away” in a firm and commanding voice. If you’re on a bicycle, you’re an even better chase for a dog, so once again get off the bike take guard behind the bike if you may, and look straight at the dog with a stern gaze. Asking it to go away as in lesson number one is another thing you should consider, but mostly the moment you stop the bike and get off the dog is bound to get confused and backtrack.
Dogs are territorial animals and fiercely guard their territories, therefore whenever they feel threatened they act aggressively, It’s important to remember that whenever you come across a dog who feels threatened you should never look it in the eye. They might misconstrue your gazing as a challenge to them. it is best to have them in your peripheral line of vision at all times. Of course if they keep coming towards you, the best thing to do is to keep looking at them till they go away. Another thing you can do when under attack is to throw, whatever you can, at them, a wallet, a loose stone. This will, if not scare, definitely distract the dog for a while. If none of this works and the dog still charges at you to knock you down, curl yourself up and cover you head and then get medical attention as soon as you can. The precautionary measures you can take to avoid getting into an aggressive confrontation with dogs, is to always be calm. If a dog comes at you check if he’s aggressive, if not, don’t make any sudden movements, also, never disturb or play with an unknown dog if it is eating or sleeping.
